Animal Welf -305x 215

Animal Welfare

At Union Market, we care about animal welfare. We know our customers would prefer to eat meat which has been reared and slaughtered with care and dignity - not only for the sake of the animal, but also because it tastes better.

We support the RSPCA's Five Freedoms:

  1. Freedom from hunger and thirst
  2. Freedom from discomfort
  3. Freedom from pain, injury or disease
  4. Freedom to express normal behaviour
  5. Freedom from fear and distress

All our meat is 100% British - born, reared and slaughtered. This means our animals spend most of their lives in one location without the stress of change or travel. We visit each of our meat suppliers and select them based on their commitment to welfare.

Our eggs are free range and come from small producers who have direct and regular contact with their flocks. Our chicken is either free range or barn reared.

Our pork is free range and outdoor reared for its entire life.

Our beef is raised according to Freedom Foods standards and will have access to pastures as the seasons permit.

Our lamb is raised on UK pasture. Our veal comes from a dairy farm in Cumbria. We only buy veal in the UK as the welfare standards are much higher here than in Europe.
